There are a few popular areas along the Baja California Peninsula where there are few traditional RV park options. You may be able to find an informal campsite to spend a night or two in the following destinations:
- Todos Santos – Only one formal campground in town exists, El Litro RV. However, this is mostly occupied by long-term residents and is mostly run-down. Your best option for exploring Todos Santos is to search for camping in nearby Los Cerritos or to take a day trip to Todos Santos from La Paz.
- Cabo Pulmo – Although this region is spectacular, it is difficult to reach due to terrible dirt road conditions. Visiting this part of Baja, Mexico, will be challenging unless you have a smaller RV or van with high clearance. All camping in Cabo Pulmo is informal dry camping where you will unlikely have cell service or anything more than wonderful views and the possibility of windy days.
- Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) – Cabo San Lucas, known for its luxurious resorts and vibrant nightlife, presents some challenges for RV campers due to increasing development in the area. Although this highly popular region at the very south end of the Baja peninsula beckons a visit, it is terribly inconvenient for campers. A handful of informal campsites and campgrounds are starting to pop up due to the demand of travelers passing through the area. However, you may have to be creative as this is more than likely just a place to explore on a day trip.
What To Expect At RV Parks In Baja California, Mexico
We like to tell all of our Baja RV caravan guests that it is best to have low expectations of RV parks in Mexico so that they can be pleasantly surprised by what they find. Although a few RV parks rival the US and Canada in terms of the amenities they offer, most provide just enough of a place for you to camp with what you need without anything remarkable about them.
Here are a few tips on what to expect for campgrounds when RVing Baja, Mexico.
Hookups
Most campgrounds offer some formal hookups. However, what that looks like and how well the amenities work are questionable. There are only a handful of campgrounds in Baja that offer 50-amp electrical service. Some will offer 30-amp power service, but most will offer 15- or 20-amp service at best.
So it is a good idea to carry the proper electrical adapters to convert 15 amp to your 30 or 50-amp RV power needs. Also, the voltage can fluctuate quite a bit in Baja. So, we recommend having a surge protector and/or a high/low voltage indicator to protect your electronics during your stay.
Many campgrounds will offer water. However, sometimes you will not have city water and can only fill up your water tanks for use during your stay. The water pressure might be quite low if there are city water connections. Although we always carry a water regulator and water filter, we rarely use these when camping in Baja.
Some campgrounds offer sewer hookups as part of a full hookup. However, many more have a dump station somewhere on the property. We have found that many of these dump stations are inconvenient, and you may have to “assist” your waste in flowing uphill into them.
Amenities
Once again, the kind and quality of amenities you may find at RV parks in Baja vary. Although the peninsula can be quite warm, even during winter, most RV parks in Mexico do not have swimming pools. But the ones that do are usually well worth the use to cool you down or provide a relaxing alternative to running around exploring the area all day.
Internet access can be spotty, particularly in popular campgrounds where the WiFi connectivity must be divided among many campers trying to stream videos. In many places, you will have a decent cell signal and can thus use your own hot spot, or you can get better service by activating a Telcel SIM card for local internet access.
Laundry facilities are also hit or miss at campgrounds in Baja. There are a handful of RV parks in Baja that offer both washer and dryer access for a small fee. However, it is more common among campgrounds to offer a washer, and then you must line dry your clothes. The dry desert air usually makes this quick work.
If you rely on the park’s bathrooms and showers, don’t be surprised if they don’t meet your expectations from north of the border. However, most campground owners understand the expectations that campers have and they do their best to provide showers with hot water and decent water pressure and bathrooms that are cleaned daily, if not multiple times daily.
