San Juanico is a quaint, artsy town fighting to remain that way. While it has developed over the years, the town lacks much of the infrastructure of other places we’ve listed in this guidebook. As such, it is not a place you might plan to visit unless surfing is a priority to you.
Even if there is no surf during your visit, anyone who enjoys surfing will appreciate visiting the world-famous “Scorpion Bay.” To some degree, it is like meeting a celebrity. Just know that the town is small and, while the road from Ciudad Insurgentes is paved and provides relatively quick and easy access to town, there are not a lot of options for camping or camping logistics.
Often referred to as “Scorpion Bay,” this tranquil fishing village is renowned for its world-class surfing, stunning coastal landscapes, and unspoiled natural beauty. Rich in history and tradition, San Juanico offers visitors a unique glimpse into the laid-back lifestyle of Baja’s coastal communities.
With its welcoming locals and serene atmosphere, it’s an ideal destination for those looking to live a little more simply in a small, artsy community.
San Juanico’s main attraction is its legendary surf breaks, which are considered some of the longest and most consistent in the world. Surfers from around the globe flock to its shores to ride the impressive waves, making it a must-visit spot for surfing enthusiasts. When the surf is up, San Juanico will be packed with many people “camping” wherever possible.
Beyond the surf, the area offers plenty of activities, from fishing and kayaking in the clear waters to exploring the rugged coastline on foot or by bike. The region’s rich marine life and pristine beaches provide endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.
Things to Do in San Juanico
Scorpion Bay is a tiny fishing village, and there is not much to do except fishing and surfing in the Pacific Ocean.
Here are the things to do in San Juanico.
Go Surfing

San Juanico is often among the top 10 surfing spots in the world. During the right swell, the bay produces more than 6 break waves, allowing you to ride for what seems to be from one end of the bay to the other. The legendary point breaks make it an unforgettable surfing destination for every surfer.
However, when there are no waves, the bay is incredibly calm and better suited for other water activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and boating.
Head Out Fishing
Like every Baja Bay, Scorpion Bay is rich with diverse game fish. Local fishermen will take you on half-day fishing tours in the Pacific in their pangas. Ensure that you have all your supplies before embarking on the journey because some fishermen will not provide fishing poles or equipment.
Embrace the Art and Culture
San Juanico is not just about fishing, surfing, and water activities. There is also a side of tranquility, connecting with nature, and stepping back in time. Local art, culture, and tradition are displayed in Galleria la Cura.
And you’ll find that most of the shops and stores in town are aesthetically pleasing and artistic in nature. There are also many opportunities to join yoga and meditation sessions at a variety of places in San Juanico.
There are no formal campgrounds in San Juanico and you will stand out like a sore thumb if you show up in town with a 40-foot fifth wheel or Class A motorhome. If you’re jonesing to visit, check out your favorite overlanding app and see what options and recent reviews say. Or book a room at one of a handful of hotels or bed and breakfasts in town and take a few nights off from camping to enjoy town.
The only legitimate camping option in town is Scorpion Bay Cantina and Campground (26.24381, -112.47717) on the southernmost edge of town, overlooking Scorpion Bay. Really, it is a dirt lot, intentionally “unimproved” by the description the owner gave us. All are welcome to park on the cliff edge with whatever kind of rig you drive, with reasonable pricing per person. The restaurant will arrange to deliver water and have a black water dump if you stay for a while.
