Discovering Playa Santispac
Situated in the vast expanse of Bahia Concepcion twenty minutes south of Mulege, Playa Santispac emerges as a magnificent location that perfectly merges the untouched beauty of nature with the conveniences suited for beachgoers who love to camp. It is recognized as the area’s most expansive beach, and it is best if you have a big rig or travel with others.
Amongst Baja California’s finest beaches, Playa Santispac distinguishes itself with not just its accessibility but also amenities such as onsite waste disposal services, toilets, and on-site restaurants. Despite becoming heavily populated during top camping times like winter months or Semana Santa celebrations, this beach maintains an irresistible allure. Campers often set up close to one another, cultivating a communal atmosphere along these beautiful shores.
A remarkable feature of staying at Playa Santispac is the awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets that cascade across the horizon in vivid hues. The majestic dawn ushers in each day, while stunning dusks bring them to a close. Both moments underscore why this is one of the best beaches in Baja California Sur.
Arriving at Playa Santispac
When traveling southward from Mulege on the coastal highway, you’re treated to stunning vistas of the Sea of Cortez. This exhilarating preview, particularly on the last hill that leads toward the beach, is just a taste of what awaits at Playa Santispac.
As you approach, it becomes evident that this area’s landscape offers more structure and cleanliness than other parts encountered while traveling through Baja California Sur. The turnoff to this popular beach is well-marked. You’ll turn left off the highway and drive around a quarter of a mile to a small house and gate, where a welcoming family will greet you and collect the fees for your stay.
Upon reaching Playa Santispac, finding an ideal spot for camping is key. The wide beach has ample space for over 100 RVs and numerous palapas for shade from the sun. To maximize your personal space and enjoyment of the bay views, positioning your vehicle perpendicular to the shoreline is required so that more campers can fit on this beautiful beach.
For those visiting the beach during the high season over the winter months, arriving earlier can be beneficial when trying to secure multiple camping spots next to each other—perfect if you want easy access between friends or family encampments.
If you are lucky, you’ll end up in a great spot and, depending on the time you get there, there may be only a few palapas available. A small strip of white sand to the south end of the beach (to the right) is popular among campers. If you travel to the north end of the beach (left side), the road will continue along the bay toward some large houses. There’s a more private beach to camp directly on Bahia Concepcion, away from the crowds.
Of course, most campers will find a beautiful spot somewhere in between and be happy to have found such a great place to spend a few nights. Be mindful of your neighbors and share your palapa if you are fortunate enough to get one. Often, many of the longer-term campers will take over the nearest palapa. While there are no rules against this, sharing the palapa and its beautiful views with your neighbors is a good idea if you are passing through.

Camping Costs and Amenities
Camping at the picturesque Playa Santispac is reasonable, at around 200 pesos per night. If you plan to stay a week or longer, you can sometimes negotiate this rate by paying in advance. Long-term campers who hunker down for the season will get a pretty good rate through the entire season.
There are no camping hookups at Playa Santispac so plan on dry camping for as long as you plan to stay. But if you plan well and take advantage of the beach vendors and basic amenities, you can spend a few weeks or months on this beautiful beach.
Power: Most campers use a solar panel system to recharge their batteries during their stay. A majority of these will have mounted solar panels on their rig. But if you drive around, you will see a handful of portable panels strewn about the beach. Additionally, while this is one of the most beautiful places to camp in Baja, there will be an almost constant hum from generators running at any hour of the day.
Water: If you stay on this beautiful beach, you will encounter more than one beach vendor who can provide you with a 55-gallon drum of non-potable water. The vendors selling water will drive around the beach, typically in the morning, and offer a container rental for a few hundred pesos. They’ll come around frequently to refill the containers as often as you need them.
We recommend putting a capful of bleach in the container before you use it, even though you should NEVER drink this water.
Sewer: There is a rudimentary dump station that you can use for around 50 pesos. It is located away from the water, toward the center of the beach. Be sure to plan in advance, such as arriving with a full fresh water tank and emptying your gray and black tanks before arriving, or plan to use this dump station to extend your stay. There are also several pit toilets at the beach and in the two restaurants. Be sure to bring your own toilet paper.
Cell Service and Wi-Fi: One of the best things about this beautiful place is that there is no cell signal on the beach. Wi-Fi is available at each of the two restaurants. One offers free Wi-Fi, while the other charges a few pesos per hour. Both options have always been unreliable. Most campers count on using Starlink during their stay at Santispac. The best way to get cell service is to drive north toward Mulege, around 15 minutes, as there will not be a cell signal heading south until you are near Loreto, just over an hour away.
Other Considerations: Although there is no on-site grocery option, local vendors come around daily and offer everything from fresh seafood and meat to banana bread and locally grown produce. Should you require more comprehensive grocery needs beyond what’s available on-site, Mulege is just 12 miles away and has numerous grocery stores where one can obtain various staples such as fresh vegetables and fruits often sourced straight from neighboring agricultural fields. Two restaurants on the beach also offer delicious food at a good price.
Pesos: Cash is king when planning purchases or dining out in these areas. Mexican pesos are preferred over US dollars or credit cards, which are commonly not accepted among these establishments. Carrying sufficient cash ensures uninterrupted access, allowing seamless transactions when acquiring goods or savoring authentic regional cuisine. But note that the closest ATM to the beach is NOT in Mulege. You will need to stock up on Pesos in Santa Rosalia if traveling from the north or Loreto when visiting from the south.
Armando’s Restaurant and Ana’s Restaurant
After a delightful day of basking in the sun and strolling along the shore, there’s nothing quite like an exquisite meal at a good restaurant. Playa Santispac boasts two favored eateries: Armando’s Restaurant and Ana’s Restaurant. Each offers laid-back dining atmospheres and delicious, cold beverages—ideal for relaxing post-beach adventures.
Renowned for its relaxed ambiance, where even canine companions are welcomed, Armando’s Restaurant invites you and your friends to gather and partake in hearty servings of various selections, from seafood to traditional Mexican plates. Armando’s tends to have weekly specials and events and the restaurant doubles as a dance floor later in the evening.
Conversely, patrons often laud Ana’s Restaurant for serving superior-quality food relative to Armando’s. Its extensive menu features beloved local seafood dishes worth enjoying if you want to take a night or two off from cooking. Ana’s is located at the north end of the beach and tends to be less busy than the more centrally located Armando’s.
Entertainment and Activities
Playa Santispac is a hub of recreational options for campers. Due to its clear waters and close islands, it offers an array of water activities like snorkeling and kayaking. For example, a kayak journey near Bird Island allows visitors to observe diverse bird species such as blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, and pelicans or to and explore tiny islets.
The vicinity of Baha Concepción boasts rich marine life ideal for swimmers and snorkelers alike. The bay’s transparent waters promise pleasure whether you’re diving into the underwater habitat or just taking a leisurely dip.
For those drawn to terrestrial pursuits, numerous hiking paths offer breathtaking panoramas of the nearby hillsides and the expansive bay. These trails present scenic views and opportunities for physical activity amidst nature’s splendor. You can hike along the coast in either direction, taking in incredible views with every step.
Community engagement is integral at Playa Santispac, with various social diversions available. Bocce ball, which is particularly popular among guests, creates bonds within the camping community. The same is true with horseshoes.
Of course, impromptu happy hours and social get-togethers are almost always open to neighbors in either direction, especially if you happen to claim one of the limited palapas on the beach. Whether you’re invited or do the inviting, plan to make friends during your stay on the beach.
Nearby Attractions and Other Beaches
Beyond Playa Santispac’s stunning shores, many other remarkable beaches and points of interest are worth exploring. The town of Mulege is around twenty minutes north of Santispac and is the hub for virtually anything and everything one might need. Whether you need groceries or drinking water or want to have a meal away from the beach, Mulege offers a lot.
An hour south, the historic town of Loreto awaits those looking for a relatively quick escape from the beach. The drive to Loreto is beautiful, with the first half hour or so passing the other beaches where you may want to stay a night or two after you leave Santispac. Plan a trip to Loreto if you need to pick up Pesos or propane or are looking for a change-up in restaurants.
The other nearby beaches you may want to visit are to the south of Playa Santispac. These are the most popular ones in Bahia Concepcion:
- Playa los Cocos
- Playa Escondida

- Playa el Requeson

Weather Considerations
When making arrangements for your visit to Playa Santispac, it’s essential to anticipate a range of weather conditions. Since the most popular time to visit the beach is during the winter, it is imperative to know that the wind in Bahia Concepcion is very unpredictable.
The winter season often brings strong winds that could potentially disrupt camping plans and other outdoor pursuits. This cooler period attracts many campers who favor Baja’s relative warmth compared to the frosty climates north of the border.
While the sea will be calm in the morning and might entice you to enjoy paddling your kayak or paddleboard, the wind usually picks up by mid-morning. It can be challenging to return to the beach depending on which way the wind blows, so keep this in mind.
There is also limited sunlight during the winter. You’ll want to keep this in mind when planning your daily activities and when deciding whether to rely on it for your solar power needs.
