If you are interested in taking a ferry to the mainland there are several options through Baja Ferry. The most popular option is to take the ferry from La Paz to either Mazatlan or Topolobampa from the Pichilingue ferry terminal.
However, there is also an option to ferry from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas. But this is less popular and less reliable.
To ferry to the mainland you will be required to have a Mexican Temporary Importation Permit for your vehicle, valid Mexican auto insurance and your FMM.
If you are considering taking the ferry to the mainland it is best to obtain your TIP at the time you cross the border. There are special forms you will need to complete in addition to a nominal deposit, which will be returned to you upon your departure from Mexico.
Note that you are not required to have a TIP when traveling in Baja, so this is often overlooked by travelers when crossing the border. If you have any inclination of taking the ferry to the mainland, be sure to purchase your TIP in advance. You can actually apply for the TIP up to 60 days in advance of your arrival in Baja.
