Punta Abreojos

Another hidden gem along the Pacific in the northern part of Baja California Sur, Punta Abreojos is a remote and tranquil fishing village known for its stunning natural beauty and rich marine life. You reach Punta Abreojos in similar fashion as Bahia Asuncion, by traveling down Highway 1 from Guerrero Negro until a wide turnoff takes you along a paved road southwest for approximately 50 miles (80 km).

The village is part of the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making Punta Abreojos a prime spot for ecotourism and offering visitors the chance to experience pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse wildlife. The town is particularly famous for its sustainable fishing practices with a local cooperative managing the fishing resources carefully.

The community of Punta Abreojos is also deeply connected to the annual migration of gray whales, which can be observed from January to April. These magnificent creatures come to the sheltered lagoons nearby to give birth and nurse their calves, providing a spectacular sight for visitors. You can often see the whales from the nearby beaches.

Besides whale watching, the area offers excellent opportunities for activities such as kayaking, surfing, and diving, allowing tourists to fully engage with the natural environment. The village itself retains a traditional charm, with friendly residents and a relaxed pace of life. Local cuisine, particularly the fresh seafood, is a highlight for many visitors.

Campgrounds in Punta Abreojos

There is only one formal camping area in Punta Abreojos before you reach the small town of Punta Abreojos.

Campo Rene

Campo Rene is a small campground that offers dry camping with access to several camping amenities, including water and a dump station. There are toilets and a shower (that varies in whether it is cold or also hot) if you need them.

The highlight of the stay is the restaurant that not only serves its own full menu but will also prepare fish you catch. The primary reason you come to camp at a place like Campo Rene is to escape the crowds elsewhere in Baja and to see what life is like in a sall fishing village like Punta Abreojos. Thus expect everything to be slower and simpler during your stay!
