Ciudad Constitucion

Ciudad Constitución, or as we affectionately call it “Stop Sign City,” is located in the heart of the municipality of Comondú in what seems like a southward stretch of the adjacent Ciudad Insurgentes. If you’re headed to La Paz, you’ll pass through here and stop completely at each of the 16 or 18 stop signs!

Ciudad Constitucion will also make for the best, albeit not most gorgeous, basecamp for making day trips to San Carlos to whale watch or fish. There are a handful of formal camping options in town that give you the ability to day trip for excursions in Magdalena Bay and to return to your rig later in the afternoon.

The city doesn’t offer much for campers, aside from a few amenities you can likely put off finding until you reach La Paz. It does offer our 2nd favorite carnitas restaurant (Asadero Dany’s on Saturday mornings in Mulege remains #1), a small open-air restaurant on the left side of the divided highway on the southside of town.

The town itself is a thriving agricultural and commercial hub. Founded in 1953, the city has grown rapidly due to its strategic position along the Transpeninsular Highway, which facilitates trade and travel throughout the peninsula.

You will notice that fertile lands surrounding Ciudad Constitución support a diverse range of crops, including wheat, barley, and various vegetables, making it one of the region’s most important agricultural centers. This agricultural abundance is complemented by a network of irrigation canals that efficiently distribute water to the fields, ensuring sustainable crop production year-round.

If you’re looking for oranges that you don’t want to buy in the supermarket, you’ll find bags of sweet and delicious fruit hanging from vendor trucks up and down the highway in town.

Beyond that, the only reason we wanted to include Ciudad Constitucion is because it serves as a strategic stopover to break up the long drive that campers typically make between Loreto and La Paz.

Situated almost perfectly between those two more popular destinations, Ciudad Constitucion has a single campground that has become increasingly popular over the years and is actually a stop we make with our caravans just so we can keep our drive days short. Plus we indulge our guests with those delicious carnitas!

Campgrounds in Ciudad Constitucion

To date, there are a few campground options in Ciudad Constitucion making it a great stop if you’d like to spend a night or two off the road between drive days or whale-watching excursions.

Misiones RV Park

This well-maintained park on the northern ed of Ciudad Constitucion offers a peaceful atmosphere amidst the busy surroundings of the town, making it an ideal stopover for those seeking rest and relaxation to break up a long drive day. The park’s convenient location ensures easy access to local attractions, shops, and restaurants if you need to take advantage of everything Ciudad Constitucion has to offer.

The spacious RV sites come equipped with full hookups and you have access to clean and modern restroom and shower facilities and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the park, allowing guests to stay connected during their visit. Common complaints, and those we’ve experienced, include shabby electrical outlets so you may not want to plug in unless you have to. Also the bathrooms can be a bit run down from time to time.

But there is a big shady lounge area near the pool, which is a treat unto itself. And Patty, the owner of the park, is incredibly friendly and hospitable. There’s typically a friendly dog around – though we did lose a single shoe that we never found thanks to its curiosity and not knowing its boundaries!
